Featured artist Jennifer McKay Higgins
Jennifer Higgins McKay is one of our featured artists here at Home and Garden Culture, where a variety of her limited edition pieces are on display and available for purchase.
A 1993 graduate of Kennett High School, Jennifer has worked creating pieces of fine art for the past two decade, specializing in custom designed and drawn murals in the trompe l'oeil style that is so detailed it's almost like looking through a window.
Whether dabbing in some simple palm trees or applying a faux finish to the walls, or creating an escapist piece of original art right on the walls of your house, Jennifer's work is evocative and fun, blending a knowledge of style and color with her own personal view on the world.
Jennifer also creates one of a kind works of art produced on recycled Trader Joe's paper bags with pen and ink that are as bold and unique as the artist herself. Jennifer discovered the blend of paper and ink by accident when she was testing to see which of her inks had dried up. After testing a pen on the paper, Jennifer found that the ink did not bleed but instead adhered to the surface in a way similar to previous projects she'd undertaken with handmade Tibetan lokta paper. Minus the bumpy surface, however, and minus the hours spent tracking down the hard-to-find lokta paper. .
In between murals and other projects, Jennifer creates beautiful and lush still life paintings that are both classic and modern at the same time. Infused with her love of Native American and Aboriginal art, her pen and ink drawings evoke a primal sense of urgency and nature, with images of dragonflies, turtles and other creatues - essentially whatever inspires her that day.

Jennifer also produces faux finishes, gilding and provides color
consultations for her clients, using their individual style to develop a custom
color palate for their setting, often spending hours determining the right
style, creating not just another "designer look," but one that reflects their own home’s
look and not the same palate for every house.

Hummingbirds - nature's speed freak on the wing
"I believe there were no flowers then,
In the world where the humming-bird flashed ahead of creation.
I believe he pierced the slow vegetable veins with his long beak"

Having wildlife share your garden space with you can be a rewarding and enriching experience.
